The second Grand Prix winner has been decided

String Art Contest 2024 with the theme "String art using thread and nails."
A total of 29 works were awarded prizes, 11 in the adult category and 18 in the children's category.
We judged the entries not only on their string art technique, but also on their originality, whether they made people want to tell others about their work, and whether they could sense the concept and passion behind the work.

Title of work: Four-armed Kannon Bodhisattva Mandala Artist: Thread-maker Yoryu

Comments on the work : A collaboration between thangka (Tibetan Buddhist painting) and thread hanging. I expressed the beauty of my beloved Tibet through thread hanging. I created this piece by layering the colors of the threads to explore how to express the beauty, delicacy, and power of the mandala.
Judges' comments : The work is carefully finished down to the smallest detail, and the five colors on the outer ring are an accent. The combination of the thread and the Buddhist painting is cool. The choice of colors and nails, and the way they are hung, are all done with care. It is a powerful piece filled with Tibetan elements.

Title of work: Seven-pointed star Author: Misa Kuwano

Comment on the work : By hammering nails into a circle and threading thread around them in a regular pattern, I created a seven-pointed star enveloped in a seven-petal flower.
Judges' comments : The seven-pointed star in the center is very beautiful. The nail placement is calculated to make the seven-pointed star stand out, and the threading is well-thought-out and difficult to do. It expresses a dense and beautiful pattern well.

Title of work: Flowers, birds, wind and moon Author: Chiharu

Comments on the work : I wanted to express the beauty of nature by combining different materials with thread.
Judges' comments : The idea is interesting and the expression is strong. The brilliance of the peacock is well expressed. If the thread on the flower pattern could be made a little more delicate, the peacock's feathers would stand out even more.

Title of work: Night of the Night Artist: Satsuki the Thread-maker

Title of work: To the beyond
Author: Sawa

Title of work: Kaleidoscope Artist: chihoko.miura

Title of work: Pure Glass Mirror Artist: Rainbow Threader

Artist: Shinen the Thread Maker

Title of work: Yumemin!
Author: Shiichan
Title of work: Hope for the futureArtist: Thread-hanging egg
Title of work: Flowering Author: sokol

Title of work: Rockets to various planets
Author: Minato Hatakeyama

Comments on the work : I like the flames the most. The clever thing I did was to string the rocket window so that it was visible. I stuck masking tape on the window to add color.
Judges' comments : The expression of the flames is excellent. The design of the board is good, with a sense of speed and dynamism. It's a colorful and beautiful rocket. The way the strings are tied is also wonderful!

Title of work: Cello on the Stage
Author: Cherokee

Comments on the work : I added sheet music, lights, notes, cotton, etc. to create the atmosphere of a performance on stage. It was difficult to hammer nails into the narrow space, but I made it while thinking about where to hammer the nails. I would like people to take a good look at the four white strings and the sheet music.
Judges' comments : It's great how you've used a variety of materials to express a fun performance scene. It's wonderful how you've paid attention to detail, not just the cello, but also the sheet music and the lights.

Title of work: Twinkle constellation Artist: Ringo

Comments on the work : I used materials that can be found at 100 yen shops.
We made a starry sky with glitter pens and small constellations with glitter stickers. We made nine constellations, centered around our birth constellations. Since we made it together, it turned out to be a very nice piece of work.
Judges' comments : This is a very well-made product using 100-yen store materials, and the theme and concept are excellent. It made me realize that string art began in ancient times when people would string together stars in the night sky to draw constellations. There were many small details and ideas that made it wonderful.

This is the second time we've held a string art contest.
We held this contest with the hope that it would be a contest that many people could participate in.

Although we received roughly twice as many applications as last time, we still felt that we could have reached a more diverse range of people.
We will continue to consider this further from next time onwards, aiming to make the contest easier for everyone to participate.
We hope that this event will enable more people to share the charm and wonder of string art through their own works and use it as a platform to showcase their work, and that it will be an opportunity for new discoveries for those who are unfamiliar with the art.

Thank you very much to everyone who participated.
And congratulations to the award winners!
The winners will be contacted by email.
Please check your mailbox and let us know if you haven't received it.

We look forward to receiving your most original submissions next time.
