DIY Tips: Types of wood paints and tips on how to apply them

Enjoy DIY painting!

Hello!
I'm Hiro, one of our staff members.

Painting has a big impact on the outcome of DIY projects.
If you've taken the time to make a DIY project, you'll want the paint to come out nicely.

So, this time we've put together a list of the types of wood paints and some points to keep in mind when painting!

Water-based and oil-based

  1. Since water is used in water-based paints and solvents, there is little odor.
・Brushes and containers can be washed with water. ・Recommended for indoor use.
Water-based paints are recommended for DIY beginners. They use water as a solvent, so they have little odor. You can also wash the tools you use with water.

  2. Uses oil-based paint and organic solvents, so has a strong odor
    Use a special thinner, etc.
-Excellent adhesion, durability and quick drying.
    Recommended for outdoors.
The beauty of the finish is also important. It depends on the characteristics of the paint, the color, and the base, so it's difficult to generalize, but many paints will produce a beautiful color finish even with just one coat.

Example of wood painting

We recommend the combination of water-based stain and urethane varnish, as you can use the stain to bring out the texture of the wood and then finish it off with urethane varnish to give it a beautiful shine and protect the wood!

How to paint

  1. Example of painting with a brush) Applying multiple coats of paint and varnish will give a nice finish.
  2. Example: Apply with a brush and wipe off with a cloth. It is also OK to apply stain or oil with a cloth.
  3. Apply with a cloth (example) Applying with waxed steel wool is also OK.

Four points to remember when painting wood

1. Polish the surface with sandpaper

Sand the wood surface smooth with sandpaper to remove any imperfections.
Sanding should be done along the grain of the wood.
The coarseness of sandpaper is expressed by the grit number. The smaller the number, the coarser the sandpaper.
The higher the number, the finer the sandpaper. Polish from coarse to fine.

2. Remove excess hair from the brush

New brushes tend to shed easily, so be sure to trim them before painting.
Remove excess hair by swirling the brush around or running it against a rough surface like concrete or sandpaper.

3. Don't apply too much paint with your brush.

The appropriate amount of paint to use is about half to two-thirds of the brush.
If you apply it all the way to your roots, it's hard to wash off and can easily become uneven.

4. Start painting from a little inside

If you paint from the edge of the wood, the paint will tend to accumulate, so spread it out starting from the inside.
If you make long strokes following the grain of the wood, you will be less likely to leave brush marks and will be able to achieve a neater finish.

I have uploaded a video of me painting it.
